Friday Night Drinks Report # 24

Thanks to all FNDers who turned up for our very first Pub Crawl last Friday. Our starting and ending venue for the evening, the Dvorni Bar, worked out perfectly and we enjoyed a great turnout as well. We did have a few challenges with overcrowding at the other pubs, but this has never been an excuse for determined FNDers in the past! As usual we have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog, and we have also posted a must-see video of the evening's hilarious helium-filled finale!

Many thanks to our fantastic sponsors, including Sloveniarelo.com and Dvorni Bar (free t-shirts), Cutty Sark Pub (free pizza), the Pizzicato restaurant (grand prize dinner for two), and thanks also to Gerry and Jim, who chipped in for the free bottles of wine and free shots of borovnicevec. And let's not forget Donna of ICS fame who did the most to organize the event but in the end was unable to join us.

We look forward to seeing everyone again in January for some highly recommended post-holiday cheer. The venue for next month's event hasn't been selected yet, but stay tuned for further announcements via email and the official FND blog.

See you in January!

FND Pub Crawl on 14 December!

This month's Friday Night Drinks will take place Friday, December 14th at the newly renovated and expanded Dvorni Bar located at Dvorni trg 2 (close by the Slovene Philharmonic). We have planned a special Pub Crawl for this months event... we'll start the evening at the Dvorni Bar between 7:00 and 8.30pm and will join with other expats from the ICS gang (the International Club of Slovenia) for a crazy night on the town.

We'll be moving from the Dvorni Bar starting at 8:30 and stopping first at the Cutty Sark pub for some free pizza (while supplies last) and then heading over to the Guinness Pub for free shots of something blue, before finally heading back to the Dvorni Bar for the highlight of the evening, which includes helium balloons, silly drinking games and giveaway prizes (a free dinner for two, bottles of wine, and 30 Pub Crawl T-shirts!).

We'd like to thank Donna of ICS fame for helping to organize the event, as well as our sponsors: Sloveniarelo.com, Dvorni Bar, Cutty Sark Pub, and the Guinness Pub, who will be sponsoring the free t-shirts, drinks, pizza, and also the Pizzicato restaurant which will toss in a free dinner for our top prizewinner.

We look forward to seeing you all the first annual FND/ICS Pub Crawl - which is sure to be a thrill. Remember to mark the date on your calendar and pass the word along to any of your friends that might wish to join the fun.

See you on the 14th!

Friday Night Drinks Report # 23

Thanks to all who turned up at the Da Bu Da Thai restaurant at last Friday. The venue was excellent and we had a near-record turnout of upwards of 100 FNDers! As usual we have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog.

Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor PriceWaterhouseCoopers for providing the free food and welcome drinks for the event. We hope some of you might find their services, such as tax advisory, to be useful during your stay in Slovenia. And thanks also to Mark and Leo from Sloveniarelo.com who sponsored the free t-shirts and additional free drinks. They offer professional relocation services, which can also be highly useful for many expats.

We look forward to seeing you all again next month for our first annual FND/ICS Pub Crawl - which is sure to be a thrill and will include some nice giveaway prizes! We'll send out a full announcement soon, so get set to mark the date on your calendar and be sure to pass the word along to any of your friends who might like to join the fun.

See you in December!

Reminder: FND Tonight at Da Bu Da

This month's Friday Night Drinks will be tonight at 8pm at the Da Bu Da Thai restaurant at Subiciva 1a in Ljubljana (next to Maximarket). We will have free food for you again this month, thanks to our newest sponsor, PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Free Food N' Drinks at Da Bu Da!

This month's Friday Night Drinks will be next Friday, November 16th at 8pm at the Da Bu Da Thai restaurant at Subiciva 1a in Ljubljana (next to Maximarket). We will have free food for you again this month, thanks to our newest sponsor, PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The restaurant has prepared a tasty menu including: Spring rolls, Curry fish cakes, Chicken satay, and Cajun chicken strips, along with a special welcome drink cocktail. The food will be served as soon as the first 20 people arrive, so be sure to come early - it won't last forever!

There will also be a number of experienced tax advisers from PwC
on hand who will be happy to discuss any tax queries that FNDers may have. Expats always tend to have tax questions, especially if they are not familiar with local filing requirements, so this could be a real help with the year end coming up. Mark from Sloveniarelo.com will also be on hand sponsoring some additional free drinks, and he'll also bring along what may be the final batch of our classic FND Tshirts, so for anyone who hasn't gotten ahold of one yet, be sure and stake your claim to next Friday.

We look forward to seeing you all again next week for an 'enlightening' evening at Da Bu Da, so be sure to mark the date on your calendar and invite along some of your friends who may wish to join the fun!

Friday Night Drinks Report # 22

Thanks to all who turned up at the Pizzicato on Friday, Sept. 12th. The location was excellent, although at times there was barely enough space inside to accommodate the swelling ranks of 70+ FNDers who turned up. We looked a bit like sardines at one point, though the food still managed to last for a couple hours (or maybe some couldn't even get to the food?). Fortunately, the action was underway outdoors as well, and many FNDers took the opportunity to head outside for a breather, or just as likely, a (cough) cigarette.

Once again it was a very international nite last Friday with guests from all around the world, many of whom joined us for the first time. As usual we have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog. Many thanks to our wonderful sponsor Steve from Ernst & Young for providing the free food for the event. We hope some of you might find their services to be useful during your stay in Slovenia.

Jim and I look forward to seeing everyone again in November. Further details will be available in the email invitation as usual. Remember to send us the email address for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list.

See you next month!

October Friday Night Drinks

Attention FNDers... this month's Friday Night Drinks will be starting at 8pm this Friday, October 12 at the Pizzicato restaurant (Gornji trg 33... see map). It's the same location where we met in April this year, but this time we have an even bigger and tastier menu of FREE FOOD for you courtesy of our sponsor Ernst & Young. The food will be fresh and hot, so be sure to come early as it won't last forever!

We look forward to seeing you all on Friday... be sure to invite some of your friends to join the fun!

Some brief FND-ish announcements...

Here are a few odd ideas we've been tossing around lately:

1. "Saturday Morning Hangover Club"... we've done this in the past on several occasions, meeting for breakfast the morning after FND. We could try it again next month if enough people are interested.

2. "Friday Night Drinks Slovene Lessons"... I'm sure you either love the idea or hate it, but either way send us your thoughts about how interested you are to learn some new vocabulary while hanging out in a pub. It could be a monthly event, mainly for fun, unless someone serious is willing to organize meetings weekly :-)

3. FND Marketplace... many of you likely have things in mind to buy or sell, so we are thinking of setting up a special section on the FND blog for short announcements. Just send your message to Gerry and he'll post it on the blog as well as on the Ljubljana Life message forum.

Friday Night Drinks Report # 21

Thanks to all who attended our first event of the season at Macek last Friday. The location worked out exceptionally well and there was just enough space to accommodate the 70+ FNDers who turned up during the evening. It was an exceptionally international gathering this time, with literally dozens of countries represented from Australia to Venezuela. Our mailing list is now more than 300 names and growing, so hopefully we'll continue to see such diverse gatherings in the future.

As usual we have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog. Many thanks to Marjorie for lending us her handy-dandy camera, as well as to our wonderful sponsors Pedersen & Partners and Slovenia Relocations for providing the free drinks and FND t-shirts for the event. We hope you'll find their services to be useful at some point during your stay in Slovenia.

Jim and I look forward to seeing everyone again in October. Steve from Ernst & Young has promised to sponsor some food for us next month, so we are especially looking forward to the next event. Further details will be available on the website and the blog, and also in the email invitation as usual. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list.

See you next month!

FND at Macek Pub in Ljubljana

Get ready FNDers...

Tomorrow is our first Friday Night Drinks of the season, and we'll be meeting at the Macek pub located at Krojaska 5, right in the very heart of Ljubljana's riverside entertainment strip (the main entrance is on Cankarjevo nabrezje). We'll be meeting at 8pm so try to come early as Macek starts to get busy very quickly. We have reserved a corner of the pub to the left of the main entrance nearby the television, so look for us there. Some of you may be hoping to watch the opening match of the rugby world championship, which we will have on screen.

We'd like to thank our sponsors in advance, Mark from Sloveniarelo.com and Nedo from Pedersen Partners for providing free drinks and other prizes for tomorrow's event. We expect to have enough funds on hand to cover at least 70 free drinks, which should hopefully last for at least an hour, but keep in mind that as the crowd grows the drinks do tend to go pretty quickly ;-)

Jim and I both look forward to seeing all of you at Macek tomorrow... remember to come early and bring a friend or two if possible!

Friday Night Drinks... the new season starts soon!

It's been a good long while since our FND Pub night gathering back in July. It's time now for yet another season of FND, and our first event will be this Friday, September 7th. We have not yet selected the final location, but it will be somewhere in Ljubljana's old town and you can rest assured that we'll be serving up some free drinks and plenty of fun as usual!

Mark from Sloveniarelo.com will also be on hand to sponsor some free drinks and will have more free gifts to give away as well so be sure to arrive early. We'll send out further details about the location later in the week. Jim and I both look forward to seeing all of you on Friday!

FND Shirt Alert!

Dear FNDers,

It has come to our attention that there have been some "fake FNDers" making appearances around town during the summer holidays. A phony FND impostor can be identified as somebody wearing a fake FND T-shirt such as this one:

It may indeed closely resemble one of our official shirts (probably made in China) but if you look closely you will notice subtle differences which are dead giveaways (i.e. no website address, nonsensical gibberish below the letters FND, and an overall lack of a clue on the person wearing the shirt). Real FNDers look like more like the people wearing the shirts below and can be identified as much by their wild and crazy antics as by the particular clothing that they wear.

So if you happen to see an FND impostor, tie him up and drag him to our next meeting where we can teach him about proper FND etiquette, or at least steal the shirt so we can burn it! ;-)

See you all in again at our next event in September.... more details to follow on the website and blog.

Friday Night Drinks this Friday, 20 July

Yes, the long hot days of summer are definitely in full swing... we were not really planning to organize an event this month, but there are still a good many FNDers in town and some of us expressed interest in getting together for a "pub night". So if anyone is interested, we will be meeting at the Cutty Sark Pub this Friday, 20 July at 8:30pm. We won't be reserving any space at the pub this time, so look for us close by the main entrance. If anyone has an FND t-shirt, please try to wear it on Friday so that any new people can locate us quickly.

Hope to see you there!

PS: As usual, sponsors are always welcome to help out with free drinks!

Friday Night Drinks Report #20

Thanks to all who turned up for a lively evening of food and fun at the Don Felipe restaurant last Friday. The location worked out quite well, and everyone seemed to agree that the food was really excellent, so we expect to be heading back there for more events in the future.

As usual we have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog. Many thanks are due to our wonderful sponsors Pedersen & Partners, Slovenia Relocations, and Ljubljana Life Magazine for providing the free food and drinks for the event. We hope you'll find their services to be useful at some point during your stay in Slovenia.

Jim and I look forward to seeing everyone again at the next FND event, which will either be in July or September. Further details will be available on the website, the blog, and also in our email invitation. Remember also to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list.

Friday Night Drinks Report #19

Last Friday's FND at the Marine House in Ljubljana was fantastic fun, and the turnout proved to be very good even despite the Laibach concert happening in town the same evening. Many thanks to the Marines for hosting us and supplying some great margaritas and other concoctions. As usual we have a few photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog.

We look forward to seeing you all again at next month's FND, where we promise we'll have more free food and drinks as usual. Further details will be available on the website, the blog, and also in the email invitation. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list. Friday Night Drinks Report # 18

Last Friday's FND at the Trattoria was very nice evening. The venue worked out quite well this time, and with summer weather arriving, it's great to have a place where FNDers can hang out comfortably both indoors and out. The turnout this time was a bit lower than usual, possibly due to the 'Friday the 13th' factor... or perhaps many of us simply decided to head to the coast to make the most of the perfect weather. In any case, we were certainly far from besting last months perfect FND storm.

The food on Friday was a welcome treat, so we would like thank the Trattoria restaurant and Ljubljana Life magazine for sponsoring the evening, as well as Sloveniarelo.com for sponsoring free drinks and t-shirts. We have some great photos of the evening up on the FND photo blog for anyone who'd like to have a look.

We hope to seeing you all again at next month's FND. As usual, further details will be available on the FND website, the blog, and also in the email invitation. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list. See you in May!

Friday the 13th FND!

This month's Friday Night Drinks will be happening on Friday this week at 8:30pm. We will be meeting at a new restaurant called Trattoria, located in the old town at Gornji trg 33 (just a few doors away from the Spajza restaurant).

There will be some free food again (although not as much as last month) and free welcome drinks for everyone, for which we'd like to thank the restaurant and Ljubljana Life Magazine for co-sponsoring the event. And to top things off, Mark from Sloveniarelo.com will also be sponsoring some additional free drinks and will bring a few more free shirts to give away as well!

We all look forward to seeing you at the Trattoria on Friday. This will be a special 'Friday the 13th' FND, so don't forget to cross your fingers, avoid any black cats on the way to town, and wear your favorite good-luck charm. Even better, bring along a friend or two, superstitious or otherwise!

FND Report # 17, March 16, 2007

What a night! I think that most of us 'regulars' would agree that last Friday's FND at the Evropa was a step into new territory. We filled up the spacious hall quite well with a record turnout of over 140 FNDers, and the consensus seemed to be that the location was just about perfect! As usual, we've got some photos of the evening up on the FND Photo Blog, so if you weren't there this weekend, check out the fun you missed!

The food on Friday was excellent, so we would like to give special thanks to Adin at Newspaper Direct for sponsoring the evening, as well as the Evropa restaurant, which co-sponsored the buffet dinner. For anyone who is unfamiliar with Newspaper Direct, they offer same-day delivery of hundreds of major newspapers from around the world. Check their website or contact them by email for more details.

Thanks again and a big farewell to Juan Roque, who was generous enough to sponsor 50 free drinks on Friday -- we wish him well at his new assignment in North Carolina. Also, congrats to Frank for winning a free bottle of Movia wine as well as Leonardo for winning a bottle of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey (didn't he also win a bottle of Irish whiskey at last year's St. Patrick's day FND???).

The following night, on Saturday, March 17, a number of FNDers also showed up for Joan McIntyre's annual St. Patrick's day party at the Emonska klet, and as usual it was a wild and crazy evening. Too bad it only happens once a year!

Jim and I hope to see you all again at next month's FND. Further details will be available on the website and also in our email invitation. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list. See you in April!

Reminder, St' Patrick's day FND this Friday

Don't forget to schedule this Friday, March 16th on your calendar. We will be having a special pre-St. Patrick's day Friday Night Drinks event, starting at 8:00pm, complete with a free buffet-style dinner and welcome drink for everyone, thanks to our newest sponsor, the Newspaper Direct company. We'll be meeting this time at the Evropa cafe & restaurant at Slovenska 47 in Ljubljana (on the corner with Gosposvetska), which is also co-sponsoring the food.

Also this month, one our fellow FNDers, Juan Roque (who many of you may also know from events at the Marine house in Ljubljana) will be leaving us unfortunately, but as a bon voyage toast he has promised to sponsor a round or two of shots or mixed drinks for his fellow FND friends. And in honor of St. P's day, Jim and I will sponsor a free bottle of Irish Whiskey for one of our lucky guests, as well as other prizes.

Jim and I both look forward to seeing everyone on Friday. Remember to invite your friends and wear something green, since St. Patty's day starts at Midnight!

Friday Night Drinks pre-St. Patty's day event

The next Friday Night Drinks will be at 8:00pm on 16 March and will be an extra-special occasion. We're calling it our pre-St. Patrick's day FND event! We'll be meeting this time at the Evropa cafe & restaurant at Slovenska 47 (on the corner with Gosposvetska). There will be free food and drinks for everyone, thanks to our newest sponsor, the Newspaper Direct company. We would also like to thank the Evropa cafe & restaurant, who will be co-sponsoring the buffet-style dinner.

In honor of St. Patty's day, Jim and Gerry will also sponsor a free bottle of Irish Whiskey for one of our lucky guests, as well as some other small prizes for the first 10 new FNDers of the evening. And keep in mind that on the following night, Saturday, March 17, Joan McIntyre will once again organize a fantastic St Patrick's day event starting at 8pm at the Emonska klet pub, and all FNDers are welcome!

Jim and I both look forward to seeing you on the 16th! Remember to invite your friends and wear something green, since St. Patty's day officially starts at Midnight!

FND Report # 16, Feb 9, 2007

Last Friday was a rockin'-good time at the Premier Pub. We filled up the place quite well with a hefty turnout of 60+ FNDers. As usual, we've got some photos of the evening up on the official FND Photo Blog, so if you weren't there Friday, come and check out the fun you missed! Special thanks to Mark at Sloveniarelo.com for sponsoring the initial free rounds of drinks, as well as to the pub for passing around free shots of boronicevec.

For next month, we are planning a really big FND event that you won't want to miss. We have a generous new sponsor who will be ponying up for some serious food and drinks for everybody, so tell all your friends and mark the 16th of March on your calendar. And remember that at midnight, St. Patrick's day will officially begin, which presents even more reason to celebrate! The following night, on Saturday, March 17, Joan McIntyre will once again organize a fantastic St Patrick's day event starting at 8pm at the Emonska klet pub, and all FNDers are welcome. Anyone who attended last year's event will know that this is something not to be missed!

Further details will be available on the FND website in due time and also in our email invitation. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to join the mailing list.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day and see you again next month!

February's Friday Night Drinks

This month's Friday Night Drinks will be happening this coming Friday, Feb 9 at 8:30 pm at the Premier Pub, located on Petkovskovo nabrezje (opposite the river from the main marketplace). Look for the FND logo by the entrance to the pub... we'll have pretty much the entire pub reserved this time.

It's been quite some time since we've had an event at one of Ljubljana's 'traditional' style pubs, so I'm sure that many of you will be looking forward to the evening. The pub has offered all FNDers a free welcome drink (unfortunately, some sweet, sugary poison). Thankfully, our good friend Mark from Sloveniarelo.com has volunteered to step up and sponsor some additional free drinks, and he'll also bring along a few polo shirts to give away as well. His drinks will be first come, first served, so be sure to arrive early!

So come and join us this Friday at the Premier Pub, and be sure to spread the word and invite a friend or two. We all look forward to seeing you there!

FND Report # 15, Jan 5th 2007

January's FND at the Bachus wine bar was a terrific event! Just 5 days into the new year, a lively crowd turned up for a wonderful evening of post holiday cheer. The new location worked out perfectly, so we expect that we will return here again in the future. As usual, we've got great photos of the evening up on the FND Photo Blog.

We'd like to thank the Bachus Center for sponsoring the free welcome drinks. And special thanks also to our outgoing friends Nico & Sunita for sponsoring 50 free drinks! We all wish them well in their new jobs in India.

Jim and I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2007, and we look forward to seeing all of you again in February. Further details will be available on the FND website and also in our email invitation. Remember to send us contact info for any of your friends who would like to be on the mailing list.

A Happy FND New Year!

The holiday celebrations may be over, but the good news is that the next Friday Night Drinks will be this Friday, 5 January at the Bachus Center wine bar, on Kongresni trg. We will be meeting at 8:30pm as usual -- the Bachus Center has a number of rooms, so be sure to look for us upstairs in the mezzanine level wine bar.

We have arranged with the bar that all FNDers will receive a free welcome drink -- be sure to ask for a free drink coupon when you arrive. Also, our fellow FNDers Nico and Sunita will be leaving Slovenia soon and have promised to sponsor another 50 free drinks as a farewell gesture to everyone in the FND community. These drinks will be first come, first served, so be sure to arrive early if you are thirsty!

The fireworks may indeed be over, but join us this Friday to help kick-start 2007 with an FND-style celebration... and as usual, bring along a friend or two to join in the fun!

See you on Friday!
